Birth Certificates
If you are requesting a certified copy of your birth certificate by mail you must include the following:

A request in writing (or typed) signed by you or a completed Birth Certificate Request form. Please ensure your written request includes...  

  • Full name at birth or name on current birth certificate  
  • Date of birth
  • Both parent's names (including mother's maiden name)   

Also include with your request:

  • Check or money order for $20.00 for each copy. (Make payable to: New London City Clerk)
  • Clear copy of a valid photo I.D.
  • A self-addressed stamped envelope. (This envelope is used to return the record)

Turn-around time: (approximately 1 to 2 weeks from the day we receive the request)
   

If you do not have a valid photo I.D.,

two of the following documents will serve as proof of identification:

  • Social Security card; Social security card supplemented with either an employment I.D. card, a paycheck stub or a W-2 form. Providing both of these documents fully satisfies the I.D. requirements
  • Motor vehicle registration
  • Utility bill showing name and current address
  • Checking account deposit slip or bank statement stating name and current address
  • Voter registration card
  • Valid government issued trade or professional license
  • Valid government issued firearm permit
  • Probation documents issued by court or other government agency, pursuant to a criminal conviction
  • Letter from a government agency verifying identity. The letter shall be dated within six months prior to the date of the request
  • Military discharge papers
  • Current school or college photographic identification
  • Government issued photo I.D. that ahs expired within 12 months prior to date of the request

Marriage Licenses

 

Marriage licenses, effective October 1, 2009, are only available in the City or Town where the marriage is to take place. Blood tests are no longer required. There is no waiting period and no witnesses required. Once the license is issued, it is valid for 65 days. 

Applying for marriage license in-person:

  • Both parties to be married, must apply in person to fill out application.
  • The fee for the license is $50.00.
  • If either party is not a U.S. citizen, a valid passport is required for identification.
  • If either party is under 18, written consent of a parent is required on the license.
  • If either party is Under 17, written consent of a parent is required and the Judge of Probate's signature of approval must be given.
  • No Marriage license shall be issued to anyone under 16 years of age.
  • Once the license is returned to us by the Officiant, signed and dated, certified copies are available for $20.00 each.
  • We do not perform ceremonies in our office, you must make your own arrangements. The Probate Judge performs weddings by appointment, usually on Tuesdays. The Probate Court is located in City Hall. The telephone number is (860) 443-7121. 
  • List of Justices of the Peace   
  • The application process takes approximately a half hour. If you would like to take the license with you the same day, we ask you come no later than 2 p.m. We are short staffed, and depending on the volume of customers, we cannot guarantee we will have time to complete it by 4 p.m.

A request in writing (or typed) signed by you or a completed marriage copy request form. Please ensure your written request includes...  

  • Both parties names (include maiden names)
  • Date of marriage      

Also include with your request:

  • Check or money order for $20.00 for each copy. (Make payable to: New London City Clerk)
  • Clear copy of a valid photo I.D.

Death Certificates

Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, as well as a number of Nursing/Rehabilitation facilities, are located in the City of New London.  If a decedent passes away in New London, we will have the death certificate among our records. 

Requesting a copy of a death certificate

A request in writing (or typed) signed by you or a completed Death Certificate Request Form . Please ensure your written request includes...  

  • Decedent's full name
  • Relationship to decedent (if any)
  • Date of death
  • Decedent's place of residence at death     

Also include with your request:
