INVESTIGATIVE SERVICES DIVISION
PISTOL PERMIT PROCESS
Pistol Permit applications can be picked up at the New London Police Department or can be printed
here.
TO ALL PISTOL PERMIT APPLICANTS:
Connecticut General Statutes mandate a single permit system within the State of Connecticut. The Chief of Police will only issue a 60-day Temporary State Permit, valid in the State of Connecticut to carry (but not to purchase) firearms. For further statutory information, see
Chapter 529 of the Connecticut General Statutes.
Fingerprints must be submitted on two different cards for a 60-day Temporary State Permit: a green State Applicant card (DPS-125-C) and a blue FBI Applicant card (FD-258). Fingerprinting may be performed at the police department. We recommend calling dispatch prior to coming in for fingerprinting to decrease wait time (860-447-5269). Items required at submission of Pistol Permit Application in addition to fingerprint cards are:
The local process takes
at least eight weeks, dependant upon the state and federal response time of your fingerprint-supported background check. Once the background check is complete, we will contact you to schedule a suitability interview with the Commander of the Investigative Services Division. Once the Chief has signed your temporary permit, you will then be contacted when you may pick it up. At the time you pick up your permit from the police department, you must
submit a certified check or money order for $70.00 to the City of New London.
You will be supplied a list of locations and schedules to obtain your five-year permit from the State of Connecticut. At that time, you must have a fourth certified check or money order for $70.00 to DPS. Along with the funds, you must bring your temporary permit and proof that you are legally and lawfully in the U.S. (i.e., birth certificate, passport, citizenship or immigration papers). Your photograph and signature will be taken at the State permit location.
Any questions on this process may be directed to Kerry Lynch, Police Secretary, Investigative Division,
(860) 440-6681.
