| Uniformed Services Division NIP-IT, CODE ENFORCEMENT TEAM In 2003 the City of New London instituted a groundbreaking program to address quality of life issues in the neighborhoods. It required the formation of a team of specialists, one each from the Police, Fire and the Building Division. The four specialists work together from an office at the Police Department’s Truman Street Substation. They systematically address all quality of life issues by jointly examining all properties street by street.
By combining their expertise and statutory authority, they are able to have lasting impacts of problems. Because they address problems an entire street at a time, the impact can be felt by the whole neighborhood. The goal of the team is to gain compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances and laws. This is usually achieved voluntarily by educating homeowners, landlords and tenants. However their efforts can result in abatement and criminal charges when all other options fail.
