 WEDNESDAY, November 18

Public Library of New London (63 Huntington Street): Author Talk with Margaret Dexter, 2pm. Dexter will discuss Malta Remembered, a memoir of one family’s journey from the United States to the Island of Malta and back. There will be copies of the book for sale and signings. This program is free and open to the public.

 

The TSETSE Gallery (190 State Street): Jill Bolte Taylor - Finding Nirvana, 6:30pm. Jill Bolte Taylor spoke before the TED Conference and described the impact of her brain aneurism. Jill is a neuroanatomist, a brain scientist, who witnessed with a clinician’s eye, what happened as her own left brain hemisphere fully shut down. We start with a short film of Jill’s talk before the conference, and quickly move into discussion of its implications.  This is a regular meeting of the Connecticut Institute of Noetic Sciences Community Group (IONS).  A $5 or greater donation to the Gallery is requested, but not required. Open to the public.


 THURSDAY, November 19

Custom House Maritime Museum (150 Bank Street): Third Thursday Jibboom Roundtable: Utterly Awesome Oysters, November 19, 6:30pm. Join Geoff Kaufman for Oyster songs & lore, Mystic Oysters for awesome Oyster tastings, Karen Rivara & Steve Plant for insights into Oyster farming in Long Island Sound & a discussion of issues of concern for area oysters farmers.


Bean & Leaf (12 Washington Street): Open Poetry Reading, 8pm.

Jazz Underground (33 Golden Street): the Rufus Davis Jim Hunter Duo, 7pm. Rufus, "Baby Grand" Davis on piano and Jim Hunter on bass will entertain us with creative, and fun, musical styling. Great music in a classy New York style jazz club with a full bar featuring Belgian beers and fine wines, light food, and desserts. Friday Nights in The District, 6-8 pm. Downtown New London is staying open late every Friday from Oct. 30 to Dec. 18! Come enjoy music, crafts, demonstrations, lectures, food, shopping and more, held at various locations throughout The District.

 

Public Library of New London (63 Huntington Street): Film: Home for the Holidays, 2pm. Academy Award winner Holly Hunter stars in this heart-warming tale of Claudia, a thirty-something single parent who returns to the place where her traditional family values originally took root—home. It’s Thanksgiving time and the household is bulging with friends and family. This film is rated PG-13.

 

Martin Center (120 Broad Street): Exploring Science with Young Children, 10am. Valerie Grant from 211 Info-line will talk to participants about activities to do with their young child involving science. Go home with handouts on lots of activities to do with your child. City News (68 State Street): Troubadour Nights, 5-7pm. A night of music and poetry. Guest: Rick Spencer. (Internationally recognized for his work as a singer, songwriter and performer of music in the American folk music tradition.) He will drop by and debut some new songs. It will be a treat. González after the film. 

The Garde Arts Center (325 State Street): Defending the Caveman, 8pm. The longest running solo play in Broadway history, Defending the Caveman has become a worldwide hit, that has both sexes roaring with laughter and recognition, with hysterical observations into contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity and the erogenous zones. Custom House Maritime Museum (150 Bank Street): The Awesome Oyster exhibition is based on a book by Penny Parsekian, and illustrated with artifacts on loan from Mystic Seaport, the New Haven Colony Historical Society, the Noank Oyster Co-Op, and from our own collection celebrates the history, natural history and current state for oysters living in Long Island Sound.  The exhibition runs through December.  A Maritime Sampler: Selections from the Frank L. McGuire Library is an exhibit culled from our library collection & archives and curated by Brian Rogers will bring to light some of these rare & rarely-seen treasures. Contact: 447-2501.

Expressiones Cultural Center (74 State St): Jorge Sarsale. Current Artist in Residence at I-Park, East Haddam. Abstract Artist who was born, lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Info at 860-501-9278.

Lyman Allyn Art Museum (625 Williams Street): Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul interprets and presents the diverse social dimensions of Cuban art in a global context through the exploration of its relationship with African, Asian, European, and Indigenous influences and belief systems.  Ajiaco consists of more than fifty paintings, works on paper, photographs, sculpture, installations, and audio works by 22 artists. Guest Curator Gail Gelburd, Ph.D., Professor of Art History at ECSU. Imna Arroyo: Ancestral Passage. Coordinating with Ajiaco is an exhibition of work by Imna Arroyo exploring the socio-cultural beliefs of Caribbean culture.  Arroyo’s work visualizes the Diaspora, the African Orishas, and the spirits of her marginalized ancestors. What’s the Word: Words and Symbols from the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, through November 30. Curated by Zina Davis, Director of the Joseloff Gallery at the University of Hartford, this exhibition features word and symbol based art from the Museum’s permanent collection. The TSETSE Gallery (190 State Street): Haitian Art & Culture. This exhibition is an exciting presentation of individual works of both American Haitian artists and a number of artists living in Haiti. A Haitian music and a talk on Haiti is planned during the reception. In addition, numerous works by famed Vermont sculptor Nick Santoro.
